MRI scans make it possible for doctors to “see” inside
thebody and in turn, diagnose and identify potential healthissues and diseases. MRI is a non-invasive procedureand there is no exposure to radiation.
How should I prepare for the exam?
There is normally no special preparation for your exam.You will be able to eat, drink and take medications
priorto most MRI studies. Our staff will advise you if
there are any exceptions. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable
clothing without metal, and you may not need to
change into a gown.
How is Open MRI different from a traditional MRI?
Open MRI is not a physically restrictive as the
traditionalcylindrical or “closed” MRI. Both claustrophobic andlarge patients benefit from Open MRI.
How is High Field Open MRI different from other
Open MRIs?
High Field MRIs (1.0T and above) feature higher qualityimages and faster scan times. Until now, only
traditionalclosed MRIs have Included high field magnets. Now, atWestbrook Open MRI, you can have the benefit of a
High-Field scan with the comfort provided by an Open MRI
How long does it take?
It depends on what is being studied, but typically anexam lasts between 20 and 60 minutes.
Will I be able to communicate with the technologist?
Absolutely. The technologist will speak with you
throughoutyour exam. You will hear a rapping sound while theimages are being taken. Although it is important toremain still for image clarity, the technologist will
let youknow when you may “take a break” and move betweenscans.
THE DAY OF YOUR EXAM
Remember to bring 1) your doctor’s order 2) your insurance card and 3)
if applicable, any
previous MRI exams or pertinent imaging studies.
You will be assigned a locker for your personal belongings. Remember,
metal,
watches and credit cards are not allowed in the scanning room. It is
generally a good idea to visit the restroom before your exam. You may
have someone accompany you during your exam as long as they are
metal-free.
